Role Overview

This role is for a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in Internet infrastructure, router firmware, and embedded networking systems. The work sits at the core of a distributed internet platform, focused on building and optimizing OpenWRT-based firmware that powers large-scale, real-world connectivity.

The position is hands-on, low-level, and impact-driven. Engineers with strong experience in routers, chipsets, and Linux networking will find this role highly challenging and rewarding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain custom OpenWRT firmware for embedded networking devices such as routers and access points

  • Customize and optimize the Linux networking stack, kernel modules, and hardware drivers

  • Integrate third-party SDKs, services, and packages into OpenWRT-based systems

  • Collaborate with hardware and QA teams on board bring-up, debugging, and system validation

  • Improve system performance, memory efficiency, and boot times

  • Strengthen firmware security through firewall rules, secure boot, and regular patching

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated firmware testing

  • Produce clear documentation for firmware configurations, system architecture, and releases

Technical Requirements

  • Strong experience with OpenWRT, LEDE, or custom Linux-based router firmware

  • Proficiency in C and Shell scripting, with experience using Makefiles and build systems such as Buildroot or Yocto

  • Hands-on knowledge of the Linux kernel, device trees, and kernel modules

  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, VLAN, DHCP, DNS, NAT, and firewalling

  • Familiarity with UCI configuration, LuCI web interface, and system logging

  • Experience with cross-compilation toolchains and hardware debugging using JTAG or serial consoles

  • Strong exposure to WiFi standards (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax) and networking chipsets such as Atheros, Broadcom, and MediaTek

Nice to Have

  • Experience with IPSec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, and WPA3

  • Exposure to cloud or device management protocols such as MQTT, TR-069, or IoT platforms

  • Understanding of hardware design fundamentals including PCB layout and SoC integration

  • Contributions to OpenWRT or other open-source networking projects

What Works Well in This Role

  • Strong problem-solving ability with close attention to detail

  • Comfort working independently in fast-paced environments

  • Clear communication and strong documentation skills

Why This Role

  • Hands-on ownership of next-generation internet infrastructure firmware

  • Direct impact on how large-scale connectivity systems operate

  • Flexible work setup with hybrid or remote options

  • Competitive compensation with growth and ownership opportunities

  • Opportunity to influence core networking systems from the ground up
