The Role

The SQL Queries team sits at the core of query execution and optimization. This is where performance, reliability, and flexibility are built into a distributed SQL engine designed for modern workloads.

As AI continues to reshape how we search, learn, and build, databases are evolving with it.

A new Specialized Indexing subteam is being formed to expand indexing capabilities beyond traditional relational systems. The work includes building high-performance indexing systems such as vector, full-text, and geospatial indexes to support AI-native and search-driven applications.

You’ll work on deep systems problems, collaborate across teams, and build production-grade features that unify structured and unstructured data.

What You’ll Do

● Design, build, and maintain specialized indexing systems including vector, full-text, and geospatial
● Improve performance and reliability across vector indexing workflows such as backfill, query planning, and data imports
● Integrate new indexing mechanisms into the query engine
● Develop hybrid search capabilities combining vector similarity with text-based search
● Contribute to design discussions, code reviews, and release planning
● Own end-to-end delivery from design through production

First month
Get familiar with the SQL architecture, indexing systems, and begin contributing to improvements

Three months
Own components related to specialized indexing and drive measurable performance improvements

Six months
Advance hybrid search capabilities and influence the roadmap for indexing and search systems

What You Bring

● Strong interest in databases, indexing systems, and distributed architectures
● Solid backend or systems programming experience (Go, C/C++, or Rust preferred)
● Experience with indexing or query execution systems such as vector, text, or spatial search
● Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
● Curiosity about AI-driven and hybrid workloads
● Focus on building reliable, maintainable, and high-performance systems
● Ability to collaborate with distributed global teams
● Typically 10+ years of experience building large-scale, production-grade systems
